Hamilton's Ferrari Resurgence: "One of the Most Enjoyable Races" Fuels Suzuka Ambitions

Lewis Hamilton secured his first Ferrari podium in Shanghai and described the race as "one of the most enjoyable" of his career. The five-time Suzuka winner arrives in Japan with Ferrari showing clear improvement and an intra-team rivalry with Leclerc beginning to ignite.

Wednesday, 25 March 2026 Japanese Grand Prix Round 3

Lewis Hamilton arrives at Suzuka — a circuit where he has won five times — with his Ferrari campaign building genuine momentum. His third-place finish in Shanghai was his first podium for the Scuderia and came after one of the most entertaining drives of his career.

The Shanghai Podium

Hamilton's Chinese Grand Prix was defined by his battle with team-mate Charles Leclerc. The two Ferraris fought wheel-to-wheel for much of the race, with Hamilton describing the experience as "like go-karting, back and forth, back and forth" per Formula1.com. He added: "You could really position your car in a nice way where there was a thin piece of paper between us sometimes."

The podium ended a 477-day wait — and Hamilton acknowledged its significance. "It's the hardest thing just to get a podium compared to a lot through my career and it was the biggest challenge to get that," he told Sky Sports F1. Motorsport.com reported Hamilton called it one of the toughest podiums of his career.

The Ferrari Intra-Team Dynamic

Sky Sports F1 asked whether the Hamilton-Leclerc battle in Shanghai had "ignited a Ferrari rivalry." The evidence suggests it has — the two drivers raced each other hard but cleanly, with Hamilton's race pace in the closing stages clearly stronger than Leclerc's. Heading into Suzuka, the intra-team competition adds an extra dimension to Ferrari's campaign.

Five-Time Suzuka Winner

Hamilton has won the Japanese Grand Prix five times — more than any other current driver. His experience at Suzuka is unmatched on the grid, and his comfort with the circuit's demanding high-speed sequences could give him an edge over Leclerc, who has never won at Suzuka. If Ferrari can close the gap to Mercedes — even slightly — Hamilton is the driver most likely to capitalise at this particular circuit.

Hamilton told Sky Sports F1 heading into Suzuka that the first podium had changed his approach. "I think coming into the season I really cultivated that really positive mental attitude and I'm taking that forward with me."
