What to Watch: A Gloves-Off Mercedes Fight and Ferrari Under Threat from McLaren

Five key storylines for Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix: the Mercedes internal battle intensifies, McLaren are closing the gap, Ferrari face a genuine threat from behind, Verstappen starts P11, and eight of the last twelve Suzuka races have been won from pole.

Saturday, 28 March 2026 Japanese Grand Prix Round 3

1. The Mercedes Internal Battle

Kimi Antonelli has back-to-back poles and is building momentum with every session. George Russell, meanwhile, admitted his car was "transformed for the worse" after a setup change before qualifying. The dynamic between them is shifting — and Sunday could be where it boils over.

2. McLaren's Threat is Real

Oscar Piastri qualified P3, just 0.354s off pole — McLaren's closest to Mercedes all season. Russell acknowledged McLaren posed a "surprise" in terms of pace. If Piastri can stay with the Silver Arrows in the opening stint, this could be a three-way fight.

3. Ferrari Under Pressure

Leclerc (P4) was honest about Ferrari's chances: "I truly think that at one point they will get away like they've done in the past two races." With Norris (P5) right behind, holding P4 could become the Scuderia's primary objective. Hamilton (P6) needs a clean start to avoid being swallowed by the midfield.

4. Verstappen's Recovery Drive

Starting P11 after a Q2 exit, Verstappen has work to do. He described "bigger problems" with the RB22 — this isn't just a setup issue. Points would be a good result from here.

5. The Pole Position Stat

Eight of the last twelve Japanese Grand Prix races have been won from pole position. That statistic, combined with Mercedes' dominant race pace, makes Antonelli the heavy favourite for victory.
