Wheatley Confirms Departure
Jonathan Wheatley has officially stepped down as Team Principal of Audi F1, effective immediately. The former Red Bull Racing sporting director, who was appointed to lead the Audi project in mid-2024, cited personal reasons in a brief statement released by the team. Formula1.com and Motorsport.com both confirmed the departure in March 2026.
A Troubled Start
Wheatley's departure comes amid a difficult opening to the 2026 season for Audi. The team — which transitioned from Sauber — has struggled with reliability from their in-house power unit. Nico Hulkenberg has scored the team's only points, while rookie Gabriel Bortoleto has yet to finish in the top ten.
The German manufacturer's vast investment was supposed to make Audi a frontrunner within three seasons. Instead, they find themselves behind the new Cadillac team — an embarrassing reality for one of the world's largest automotive companies.
Binotto Takes Over
Mattia Binotto, who joined the Audi F1 project as Chief Operating Officer and Head of the F1 programme, has assumed Team Principal responsibilities following Wheatley's departure. Binotto, formerly Team Principal at Ferrari, now leads both the technical and operational sides of the Audi programme.
Reporting from Formula1.com and Motorsport.com indicates that family relocation issues — Wheatley was based in the UK while the team operates from Hinwil, Switzerland — and role limitations under Binotto's broader authority were contributing factors in the departure.
What Happens Next
With Binotto now firmly in charge, Audi's F1 programme has a clearer leadership structure. The team also appointed James Key as Technical Director and Inaki Rueda (formerly Ferrari's Head of Strategy) as Head of Strategy — experienced hires aimed at stabilising the operation for the long term.
