The Midfield Shake-Up: Haas, Racing Bulls and the Rookies Leading the Charge After Australia

Bearman P7, Lindblad P8, Bortoleto P9 — the rookies and midfield teams delivered in Melbourne. Meanwhile, Aston Martin and Cadillac face very different challenges heading into Shanghai. Here is the state of play beyond the top four teams.

Thursday, 12 March 2026 Chinese Grand Prix Round 2

While Mercedes, Ferrari and the recovery drives of Verstappen and Norris dominated the headlines from Melbourne, the midfield battle produced some of the most compelling stories of the opening round. Here is where every team outside the top four stands heading into the Chinese Grand Prix.

Haas: The Best of the Rest

Oliver Bearman's P7 finish in Melbourne was one of the standout results of the weekend. The young Briton, in his first full season, delivered a clean, consistent race and scored six points. "It's a special feeling to start the new regs like this," Bearman said in his post-race interview with Formula1.com. With team-mate Esteban Ocon finishing P11, Haas showed genuine midfield competitiveness.

Racing Bulls: Lindblad's Stunning Debut

Arvid Lindblad's eighth-place finish — scoring four points on his F1 debut — was the feel-good story of the weekend. The 18-year-old ran as high as third on the opening lap after a brilliant start, went wheel-to-wheel with Lewis Hamilton, and held off Bearman in a late-race battle. He described the result as "pretty nuts" per Formula1.com. Autosport reported that Racing Bulls engineers are "already loving" the data Lindblad is producing. Team-mate Liam Lawson finished P13.

Audi: Bortoleto Scores on Debut

Gabriel Bortoleto's P9 finish — two points in his maiden grand prix — was a quietly impressive result for the Audi project. Nico Hulkenberg did not participate in the race (the specific circumstances were not immediately detailed), but Bortoleto showed that the former Sauber operation has a competitive baseline despite Mattia Binotto's pre-season warnings about a "very bumpy" season.

Alpine: Steady but Unspectacular

Pierre Gasly scored a single point with P10 in Melbourne, while Franco Colapinto finished P14 in his first race for the team. Alpine's pace was consistent but unspectacular — they are firmly in the lower midfield and need development to move forward.

Aston Martin: The Crisis Continues

Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll retired from the Australian Grand Prix. The Honda battery crisis that plagued their pre-season preparation carried directly into the race weekend. Adrian Newey's pre-race admission that participation was "not certain" proved prophetic — the team completed minimal racing laps. Shanghai offers a chance to gather data, but the underlying reliability issues remain unresolved.

Cadillac: Learning Curve

Sergio Perez finished P16 in Cadillac's debut, three laps down on the leaders. Bottas retired on lap 16 with a fuel system issue. "We're just losing in all the corner apexes, we can't carry enough speed," Bottas told media. Motorsport.com assessed Cadillac's main weakness as downforce and mechanical grip rather than power unit performance — unsurprising for a brand-new chassis operation. The team confirmed upgrades are planned for every race in the opening five rounds.
