Piastri Leads the Way
Oscar Piastri topped the FP2 timesheet at Albert Park, delivering the kind of performance the Melbourne crowd had hoped for from their home-grown driver. Kimi Antonelli was second and George Russell third, with Mercedes occupying both positions immediately behind the McLaren -- a signal that the Silver Arrows will be the car to beat once the serious running begins.
FP2 carries substantially more weight than the opening session. Long-run tyre data gathered in the second hour provides the primary input for race strategy modelling, and qualifying simulations on soft compound give a cleaner read on outright one-lap pace. Piastri's fastest time therefore lands with greater significance than Leclerc's FP1 benchmark.
McLaren's Strategic Read
The McLaren MCL39 showed encouraging tyre behaviour on the longer stints -- a critical data point after the team's race-pace inconsistency in the latter stages of 2025. Piastri and Norris completed overlapping long-run programmes, with engineers comparing C3 and C4 degradation curves. The implication for race day is that McLaren may have the tools to execute an undercut or overcut depending on how VSC and Safety Car windows fall.
Mercedes: Methodical and Measured
Antonelli and Russell's second and third positions represent solid, unflashy progress for Mercedes. The team ran both cars on medium and soft compound, with particular attention paid to the W17's rear stability on the Albert Park kerbs. Russell reported a balanced car. Antonelli, increasingly comfortable with the machinery, matched his team-mate's pace on equivalent fuel loads.
Ferrari's Long-Run Picture
Hamilton and Leclerc both completed extensive long-run programmes in FP2. The SF-26 appeared to manage tyre temperature well in the Albert Park conditions. Hamilton, in only his second competitive session with Ferrari, described the car's balance as encouraging over team radio.
The Midfield Picture
Audi, through Hulkenberg, showed competitive pace in the upper midfield on qualifying simulations. Haas, Aston Martin, Alpine, and Williams all completed full programmes without incident. Cadillac and Racing Bulls used FP2 primarily for further power unit calibration runs.
