A New Era Begins
The 2026 Formula 1 season opened with George Russell leading a Mercedes 1-2 at Albert Park, crossing the line 2.974 seconds ahead of Kimi Antonelli. The new regulations produced an instant classic — narrower, lighter cars with active aerodynamics and 50-50 power split creating visibly different racing.
The Leclerc-Russell Duel
The race's defining sequence came in the opening laps. Leclerc jumped Russell at Turn 1, and what followed was extraordinary: seven changes of lead between the pair in the opening nine laps. Both drivers pushed to the limit, with Russell eventually emerging ahead when a Virtual Safety Car — triggered by Isack Hadjar's retirement — allowed Mercedes to execute a perfectly timed pit stop.
Piastri's Heartbreak
Oscar Piastri's home race ended in the cruellest way possible. The Australian crashed at the exit of Turn 4 during reconnaissance laps on the way to the grid, describing it as "a combination of bad factors." The damage was too severe to repair, ending his race before it even started.
Red Bull's Early Warning
Max Verstappen salvaged P6 after starting 20th — a recovery drive that showed his raw talent, but also exposed the RB22's fundamental weaknesses. Hadjar's retirement with a power unit issue was an early warning sign for Red Bull Powertrains.
The New Order
The full top 10: Russell — Antonelli — Leclerc — Hamilton — Norris — Verstappen — Bearman — Lindblad — Bortoleto — Gasly. Oliver Bearman's P7 for Haas and Arvid Lindblad's P8 on debut for Racing Bulls were standout performances from the grid's younger generation.
