McLaren's Qualifying Breakthrough
According to BBC Sport F1, Lando Norris became the first driver to beat Mercedes in qualifying this season, securing pole position for the Miami Grand Prix sprint race. The reigning world champion's performance marks a significant shift in the competitive order after Mercedes' early dominance in 2026.
Motorsport.com reported that Norris topped the single-lap SQ3 shoot-out at the Miami International Autodrome, defeating championship leader Kimi Antonelli. The McLaren driver's upgraded car proved decisive, with the session representing the first competitive outing following a mid-season upgrade cycle across the grid. Oscar Piastri qualified third behind Antonelli, securing a McLaren 1-2 on the front row for the sprint.
Sprint Race Victory and Competitive Gains
GPFans confirmed that Norris led a dominant McLaren 1-2 finish in Saturday's sprint race, with Piastri holding second. Motorsport.com noted that Ferrari's Charles Leclerc finished third, confirming that the paddock-wide upgrades had brought the Scuderia and McLaren back into contention after early-season Mercedes dominance.
Technical Violations and Grid Adjustments
Motorsport.com disclosed that Gabriel Bortoleto was disqualified from the Miami sprint race after his car's engine intake air pressure was found to have exceeded the permitted limit. The Audi driver had crossed the line in 11th position before the technical violation was discovered.
Additionally, Crash.net reported that Alex Albon was dropped down the grid following a track limits offence that was originally missed during sprint qualifying. The Williams driver received the demotion in a late FIA announcement, moving from a higher grid position to 19th on the sprint race starting grid.
De Telegraaf noted that Max Verstappen secured fifth on the sprint grid, marking his best result to date in the 2026 season.
