Piastri Breaks Mercedes' Stranglehold
Oscar Piastri delivered exactly the statement McLaren needed, topping the FP2 timesheets with a 1:30.133 — the first time all season a non-Mercedes driver has been fastest in any practice session. Kimi Antonelli was close behind at +0.092s, with George Russell third at +0.205s.
After the devastation of a double DNS in Shanghai, this was the perfect response from McLaren. Both cars completed their programmes without reliability concerns — crucial given the battery failures that ended their Chinese GP before it started.
Norris Disrupted Again
Lando Norris posted the fourth-fastest time (1:30.649, +0.516s) but his session was cut short by a suspected hydraulic leak on the MCL40. Given the Chinese GP nightmare, any reliability flag will cause concern in the McLaren garage.
Ferrari in the Mix
Charles Leclerc (P5, +0.713s) and Lewis Hamilton (P6, +0.847s) were both within range. The gap to the front is still significant, but Ferrari look like a solid best-of-the-rest at Suzuka.
Verstappen Drops to P10
Max Verstappen slipped to P10 (+1.376s) — a significant drop from his FP1 position of P7. Red Bull's struggles with the RB22 appear to be deepening as the weekend progresses. Nico Hulkenberg (P7, +1.308s) for Audi was the surprise of the session, outpacing the four-time champion by nearly a tenth.
