Verstappen's Endurance Racing Debut Undone by Late Technical Failure
Max Verstappen's entry into the 2026 Nurburgring 24 Hours ended in disappointment on May 17th when a late-race reliability issue forced his car out of contention. According to Sky Sports F1, the Red Bull F1 driver was competing for victory when the technical failure struck, costing his team a realistic chance at winning the storied German endurance event.
Mercedes Breaks a Decade-Long Title Drought
The Race reported that the #80 Mercedes-AMG GT3 of Winward Racing claimed the 2026 victory, ending Mercedes' Nurburgring win drought. According to AutoRacer.it, the winning car was piloted by Maro Engel, Luca Stolz, Fabian Schiller, and Maxime Martin, securing the manufacturer's third triumph at the venue in a decade.
Verstappen's #3 Mercedes entry—the sister car to the winning machine—had been locked in close competition throughout the race before the mechanical issue intervened, The Race noted.
Verstappen Eyes a Return
Despite the setback on his debut, Sky Sports F1 reported that Verstappen has signalled his intention to return to the Nurburgring 24 Hours in future campaigns, suggesting the reliability failure has not deterred the F1 driver from endurance racing competition.
