A Day of Compounding Failures
Audi's Miami Grand Prix Sprint weekend spiralled into a technical nightmare, according to reporting from Crash.net, GPFans, RacingNews365, and The Race. The team faced what Crash.net described as "firefighting issues" and "miracles" across Saturday's schedule, with problems cascading from qualifying through to the race itself.
Pre-Race Fire Ends Hulkenberg's Sprint
Nico Hülkenberg was unable to start the Miami Sprint race after his car caught fire before the formation lap, according to RacingNews365 and GPFans. The dramatic incident left the German driver stranded in the garage and unable to contribute points to Audi's championship effort.
Bortoleto's Qualifying Fire and Subsequent Disqualification
Gabriel Bortoleto's qualifying session concluded in a cloud of smoke, as reported by GPFans. The situation deteriorated further when Bortoleto's 11th place Sprint finish faced disqualification, according to RacingNews365. The Race confirmed the disqualification was triggered by an engine technical infringement, stripping the Brazilian of his result entirely.
Secondary Failures Mount
A second fire afflicted the Audi operation during the weekend, with RacingNews365 noting that "Audi cannot catch a break at the Miami Grand Prix" as difficulties compounded across the day.
Broader Grid Issues
Audi was not the only team managing technical challenges in Miami. Crash.net reported that Lewis Hamilton was battling software issues in his Ferrari throughout the weekend, demanding what he characterized as "big changes" to address the problem.
